ETIAS for the Schengen area: the complete guide
ETIAS is the Schengen area’s forthcoming electronic entry authorization: one authorization covering every country in the zone, valid three years. It is not in force yet — the launch has slipped to 2027 — but it is worth understanding now, because it will apply to every trip to Europe once it opens.
What ETIAS is
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is not a visa. It is an electronic travel authorization for visa-exempt travellers, recorded against your passport number, valid for entry to every Schengen country — for tourism, visits, business or transit.
One authorization covers the whole zone. You do not need a separate one per country, even if your itinerary crosses several of them.
The 90-day rule — the part people get wrong
You may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the entire Schengen area rather than per country. Two weeks in Spain and two weeks in Italy is 28 days of your allowance, not 14 and 14. Arrival and departure days both count.
When it will actually start
This is where most sources go wrong, and it is worth understanding why. The original plan had three stages: launch in the last quarter of 2026, a six-month transition in which the authorization is recommended but not required, then mandatory from April 2027 with full enforcement in October 2027.
In July 2026, however, the Commission removed the late-2026 target from the official page, after eu-LISA — the agency running the system — concluded a 2026 launch was not feasible. Which means every date derived from that launch, "April 2027" included, was derived from a starting point that no longer exists. Anyone quoting them today is quoting a cancelled schedule.
A revised timeline is expected after eu-LISA’s September 2026 board meeting. Until an official announcement, any precise date you see is a guess. The EU has committed to giving several months’ notice, so it will not catch you out.

The official fee is around $22 per traveller. With Visale the all-in price is $89 per traveller, including completion, human review and filing. Under-18s and over-70s are exempt from the fee but still need the authorization.
Common mistakes
- Miscounting days — It is 90 in 180 across the whole zone, not per country.
- Wrong country of entry — Name the country you land in first, not your main destination.
- Confusing it with the UK — Britain and Ireland are outside Schengen and need their own authorization.
- A passport expiring soon — The authorization expires with the passport, even if that is only months away.
