Canada eTA: the complete guide
Israeli passport holders enter Canada without a visa, but with an electronic travel authorization. It is one of the cheapest and fastest authorizations there is — provided it is filled in correctly.
What the eTA is
The Electronic Travel Authorization is required by Canada from visa-exempt travellers arriving by air. It is linked to your passport, has no physical form, and lasts up to five years or until the passport expires — whichever comes first.
When it is required — and when it is not
- Required by air — Every arrival by plane needs one, including flights merely connecting through Canada.
- Not required by land or sea — Driving in from the US or arriving by ship needs no prior authorization.
- Not a work permit — It covers tourism, visits and business — not paid employment or long courses.
Cost and timing

Common mistakes
- A typo in the passport number — The leading cause of check-in problems — the authorization simply will not be found.
- Filing on a passport about to expire — The authorization expires with it.
- Hiding a past refusal or offence — Canada checks. Declare it and take advice first.
- Forgetting transit — A connection in Toronto or Vancouver still needs an eTA.
