China tourist visa: the complete guide

Unlike most destinations in these guides, China still requires a real tourist (L) visa filed at a visa centre — not an electronic authorization. It takes longer, so start early.

Why China is different

Most destinations moved to electronic authorizations delivered by email. China did not. The Chinese tourist visa is a physical sticker placed in your passport after documents are filed at a visa centre — which means surrendering the passport for the processing period. Plan around it: you cannot travel elsewhere while it is being processed.

What you need

1A passport valid at least six months, with two blank pages.
2A recent passport photo on a white background.
3Return flight bookings — genuinely required, not merely recommended.
4Hotel bookings covering the whole stay, or an invitation letter from a host in China.
5A completed application form including a day-by-day itinerary.

What it costs

The consular fee is around ILS 220 per traveller and varies by visa type and number of entries. With Visale the all-in price is ILS 309 per traveller — file preparation, a document check before submission, and handling with the visa centre.

What holds applications up

Frequently asked

Is there an e-Visa for China?
Not for Israeli passport holders. A standard tourist visa with document submission is required.
How far ahead should I start?
At least three weeks before the flight — your passport is with the visa centre for part of that.
Do I need a visa to transit China?
Transit exemptions exist at some airports under specific conditions. It depends on your route — worth checking case by case.
Can I extend my stay?
Extensions are possible at immigration offices in China but are not guaranteed and require a reason.
